New US organization backs the export of products to Cuba and the ending of travel restrictions to the island

Two of the biggest companies in the US, ARCHER Daniels Midland Co. and Caterpillar Inc. have joined agricultural groups and commercial groups to fight laws set up by George Bush that limit and hinders the sale of US products to Cuba.

According to the Washington office of Reuters and Kirby Jones the president and consultant of the newly formed Association of Commerce US-Cuba, the group will back a project which will try to revoke the laws that went to effect February 22 which demands that Cuba pay for the merchandize before it leaves the port.

The US export companies involved agree that the fastest and cheapest way to engage in the sale of products is to send the ships and to wait pay.

In both the US House of Representatives and the Senate there have been laws proposed that would permit Cuba to pay directly to financial institutions and which will permit business travelers to travel to Cuba without the procurement of a travel permit issued and sometimes denied by the Treasury Department.

The new association also backs laws that would end travel restrictions to the island.

The initiatives are part of "Day of Action for Cuba", supported by three organizations which believe in a more open and less confrontational politics between the US and Cuba.

According to Jones, "We have formed this association with the support of our members as they believe that our commerce with Cuba should continue and that trade and travel to the island should be expanded as well".

He added, "The new laws have definitely damaged our trade with Cuba".

He emphasized that the new organization would work towards the normalization of trade with the island.

The members of the new organization include: USA Engage, National Council of Foreign Trade, US Wheat Association, US Federation of Rice Growers.
