Cuba
rejects report and accuses GENEVA, Switzerland, March 23.— Cuba today rejected a report on the alleged human rights situation on the island, stating that it believed it was the fruit of pressure by the United States in order to justify the blockade that attacks the stamdard of living of the people, reported PL. Iván Mora Godoy, Cuban ambassador to this UN agency, said that the report is the result of “brutal pressure and influence” by the United States on members of the Human Rights Commission (HRC). He argued that the document is based on the slander and lies of Washington’s anti-Cuba campaign. Mora Godoy said he believed it was immoral that this report does not refer to “the atrocities occurring in what is today an international torture center on Cuban territory illegally occupied by the United States on the naval base in Guantánamo.” Whilst the Cuban ambassador was speaking, each delegation was presented with a copy of the book Cuba y los derechos humanos (Cuba and Human Rights), published by the Cuban Foreign Ministry. With the Cuba bench empty – as an unequivocal sign of protest – the presentation of the anti-Cuba report was made by French jurist Christine Chanet. Havana acknowledged her professional merit but not her mandate, describing it as the fruit of the Washington-imposed politicization of the UN Human Rights Commission.
