Letter circulating in the UN regarding the human rights violations of relations of the Five

THE delegation from the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) participating in the discussions of the UN Commission on the Legal and Social Condition of Women has circulated a letter among participating delegations setting forth the human rights violations of family members of the five Cuban patriots unjustly imprisoned in United States.

The meeting is to evaluate the work undertaken during the 10 years since the UN 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing.

In the letter, Yolanda Ferrer Gómez, FMC general secretary, explains that Olga Salanueva Arango and Adriana Pérez O’Connor, the wives of René González Sehwerert and Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, respectively, "have been the victims of brutal and systematic violence," given that they have been denied, in a constant manner, the right to visit their husbands.

"This attitude, hostile and inhuman," the letter adds, "directly and unjustly affects little Ivette González Salanueva, aged six, who has been deprived of her right to see her father."

It is also explained that in the same manner, violence is being directed at the mothers and wives of the other anti-terrorist fighters who are suffering imprisonment for the same reason, given that their permits for routine visits are being unnecessarily delayed.

The letter asks for solidarity from the governments and parliaments represented at the important meeting, given that one of the essential goals of the Commission is respect for the human rights of women and the prevention of women being utilized as instruments of pressure in terms of resolving conflicts.
