• A few months ago in Madrid, some scoffed at the ideas of renown Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, when he asserted that, "Guantanamo resembled Auschwitz".  Some felt that the words were used to capture the attention of the public.

"Guantánamo is like Auschwitz, because in both places the prisoners had no identity; in Auschwitz they were Jews, while in Guantanmo they are simply detainees", asserted Agamben.  "I must add that they are...Arabs under imperial schemes - which have been demonstrated in the past in the Middle East - have been made the scapegoats.  The horrors of Abu Ghraib which shook the world has more sinister repercussions as Red Cross information has revealed more repugnant actions:  the confirmation that a great number of doctors have collaborated with the torturers.   

In a New York Times article, according to the Red Cross, the system created by the SS of Rumsfeld in Guantanamo,  "Is nothing short of a intentional system based on cruelty, an unusual and degrading treatment of prisoners which by any definition constitutes torture. 

The detainees are kept for months in solitary confinement and are constantly subjected to loud noises and to excessive temperatures.

The Red Cross confirms that doctors and nurses have aided the torturers in giving them advise on the use of psychological pressure as well as advising the torturers on the psychological vulnerability of the prisoners.  The Red Cross adds that this all constitutes a flagrant violation of the ethics of medicine.  

According to press reports the experts in torture in Guantanamo are given technical assistance by a group named The Behavioral Science Consultation Team.

An article published by the distinguished medical journal The Lancet revealed how doctors and other health professionals were accomplices in torture in Abu Ghraib as well as Afghanistan, pointing out that they collaborated in the design and practice of interrogation techniques based on psychological as well physical coercion.   

The Lancet reported an incident where a detainee fainted and became unconscious after an interrogation; after being revived by a doctor the abuses continued.

According to The Lancet in many cases the doctors and paramedics who were present when torture was being applied or were aware that torture was being used did not denounce it. 

According to the article doctors covered up the deaths of the victims of torture, in Iraq as well as Afghanistan, filling out false death certificates, listing the cause of death of the victims as natural. 

In the concentration camp of Guantanamo - an illegal occupied territory in Cuba which is a US military base - under the orders of US General Jay W. Hood torture was wide spread.  The Red Cross presented Washington with grievances and facts pertaining to the torture of detainees by the military in the base. 

That these abuses were condoned long before that is demonstrated in that in September of 2003 the Pentagon sent General Geoffrey Miller to Iraq because they were not satisfied by the information obtained from the prisoners in that nation.  According to the Pentagon it was Miller who recommended that the military police apply brutal and degrading treatment to the prisoners.        

Later on teams of private interrogators, recruited from ex-members of the military police and personnel from penal institutions in the US, urged that the prison guards "soften up" Iraqi prisoners as to make it easier to reach their interrogation goals. 

In the process of the use of torture the US army has admitted that dozens upon dozens of prisoners had died in jails in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Nicknamed the "Angel of Death, the diabolical Nazi doctor Joseph Mengel used prisoners of Auschwitz like laboratory rats, cruelly abusing and degrading them based on race.

The presence of doctors in the rooms of tortures of Ronald Rumsfeld, as seen in the latest chapter of Torture Gate of George W. Bush, is not to far from the historic nightmare of the monster named, "Angel of Death".
