Iraq:  Waiting for the final fuse

Vicky Pelaez

"History will judge him, however, he will have the best of lawyers: forgetfulness".

In these days while the world remembers the horror of the holocaust in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when the United States wiped out more than 300 thousand innocent people from the face of the earth, the mass media is hiding the results of the other barbaric acts committed in Iraq.  No one shows the children, the women and the elderly who are harassed and intimidated by the invading army.  They also hide from the peoples of the world the fact that the Iraqi resistance is forcing the Big Boss into planning an "honorable withdrawal" and to negotiate an oil deal - the latter being the reason for the carnage in that nation.

There are no nuclear bombs being used in Iraq, instead, so called intelligent bombs, which in reality kill indiscriminately.  In the 800 days of the occupation more than 100,000 defenseless people have died.  While the world remembers the tragedies that occur in Hiroshima and Nagasaki no one mentions the destruction and the dead in Iraq; the cities destroyed, the museums that were ransacked; not even the tortures are affecting a humanity who is simply dreaming of individual well being and individual existence and survival.

It seem that the phenomena of indifference is nothing new and that it repeats itself periodically.  After the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the US mass media made a great concerted effort to misinform the world, justifying the use of nuclear weapons; lying about the horrors of the effects the radiation had on the population in the area, and hiding the real reason for such a barbaric act.  It is quite revealing to read articles written in the New York Times, at that time by Pulitzer Prize winner, William Lawrence, as he described the atom bombs as a "blessing" to the Japanese people.

In that era no one dared to say that those bombings gave birth to the infamous "preventive wars"; a policy that would 58 years later be reborn by George Bush and his hawks and used in Iraq.  The Germans had surrendered on May 7, 1945, while the Japanese emperor was preparing the final documents of surrender; a surrender that would take place in the beginning of August.  It was expected that the Soviet troops were going to enter Japan on August 8.  On August 6 the would be boss of the world, Harry S. Truman, to prevent Soviet military advance, sent a message in the form of the nuclear bombs.  In 1948 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, P.M. Blacket declared that Hiroshima was the first act in the "cold war".  Of course all of this was silenced.

Something similar is now happening in Iraq.  No one cares if they kill thousands of Iraqis as they are all presented as terrorists by the mass media.  No one mentions the mysterious extermination of more than 500 of the best minds and scientists in Iraq.  It is as if a dark force has planned that Iraq should never rise again.  In Baghdad alone, a person dies violently every hour; there aren't enough coffins to burry the dead.

Nevertheless, neither massacres, nor high technology can destroy the Iraqi resistance. The US troops which occupy 100 bases and who only come out to fight groups of a hundred or more are being met with a resistance that has driven them into a state of delirium.  Meanwhile, the newly recruited Iraqi troops are not ready to confront the resistance.  The nation is submerged in chaos and is without legitimate authority.  Corruption reigns, as all are involved in it in one-way or the other.  It is known that for example when the commander of the new security forces in Iraq signs a form for 2,000 combatants in reality there are less than 300.  The US authorities do not posses the infrastructure to control the chaos.  The petroleum highly desired by the invaders - as their own supply is dwindling down - is out reach as the pipelines are constantly attacked.

Although the Pentagon claims 1,860 US soldiers have died, according to an estimate made by military authorities of Puerto Rico the number of US soldiers killed surpass 4000.  Also, according to German News Agency the number of wounded allied soldiers is close to 100,000; not 12,700 as the Department of Defense claims.  The morale of the soldiers is very low.  According to military studies more than 54 percent of the soldiers feel demoralized; this is especially true of the National Guard members and Reservists.  Not only do they feel demoralized because of the war but also because they lost their jobs; and because they fear for economic insecurity should they return home alive.

The stress produced by fear and the violence all around them is significantly affecting their capacity to fight.  The situation is so grave that the Pentagon had to send 200 psychiatrists and psychologists to Iraq to form part of teams that would help the soldiers cope with combat stress.  It is well known that more than 30 percent of those that return from Iraq or Afghanistan will suffer severe depression or stress related trauma.

The paradox in this situation is that this year the commander in chief drastically reduced the budget of the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Program cuts were made especially in the treatment of mental illnesses; something, which means that the majority of those who need treatment will not receive any care.  All of this despite estimates made by specialists that funds will be needed to treat at least 300,000 soldiers.

In reality, what is left for the US is to get out as quickly as possible from Iraq.  Something that has been proposed by the Foreign Relations Council (the right hand of the Bilderberg Group and the Trilateral Commission) and Senator John Kerry.  It has been proposed that oil agreements be made with the next government of Iraq, as the current government is not expected to last long.  It should be added that the problems in that nation would increase by August 15 when the Constitutional Assembly presents a "new constitution" in Iraq - a constitution designed by the US.

Neither the government nor the Assembly have agreed with a new name for Iraq; nor have they agreed with the 18 articles of the Magna Carter.  The Sunnis want the country to be named The Iraq Republic; the Shiites want The Federal Islamic Republic of Iraq, while the Kurds prefer The Federal Republic of Iraq.

Meanwhile, according to Colonel Mark Gurganus, the resistance is increasing their attacks on allied troops.  It seems as though the world and the American people are indifferent, and as such, the war hawks under the directives of Dick Cheney have, according to an article written by Philip Heraldi in the "American Conservative", a contingency plan that includes a preventive nuclear war against Iran should an attack similar to the World Trade Center occur.  This agenda is already in place as according to military plan put into place, CONPLAN 8022, the use of small nuclear bombs has been put under the control of commanders of the tactical forces.
